We've been looking at the different types of games an experiences available to play in virtual reality. It seems that gamers fit into one or more distinct 'tribe' based around the game's genre. In this article, we look at what kind of tribe member you might be.


You like to be able to discover new things and perhaps travel to places you have been to in real life. Start your exploration in virtual reality by strolling the streets of Tokyo, standing at the top of the highest peaks and visiting the Manhattan skyline. Then take a trip to our solar system and move freely around it with every planet modelled and moving around the Sun. Finish your exploration off by visiting Vesper Peak in Venice and a trip to Snæfellsjökull National Park in Iceland.


Does surviving a zombie apocalypse and defending the planet against waves of droids sound like a great adventure? Welcome to the Survivor tribe. You will start your first-person shooter adventure fighting off relentless waves of droids with all the weapons and gadgets you could ask for and dodging and blocking laser strikes with your shield. Then leave the Sci-Fi behind and step in to a post-apocalyptic world featuring blistering hot deserts, treacherous canyons and deep, dark mines. Manage your ammo carefully and put the undead back to rest.


Does fixing a car sound like a perfect Sunday to you? Then being able to repair a robot could be a dream job. If this sounds like you, then you belong to the Engineer tribe. Your journey in virtual reality could start in 2050 in a world where robots have replaced all human jobs. Working in the garage which is run by SLZBOT you will repair cars and even sabotage them to make sure you get repeat business. Leave time in your VR session to join the Aperture Science’s Human Diversity Outreach program, they are now hiring and they need you. Hopefully you will impress GLaDOS to get recruited!


Do you like to solve mysteries? Would you like to become a secret agent? Investigator tribe is the one to select if you agree. Become an Agent with a mission to find a radical who broke into CIA facilities and stole research documents. Your mission will take dark turns as you learn the truth in a problem-solving game within a fully immersive environment. If being an Agent isn’t for you, then become an Investigator and figure out what caused a violent incident in a futuristic bar by manipulating time. Explore the scene and unlock the story’s branch points and unravel the mystery.


Does finding clues and using logic to find solutions sound like the perfect excuse to leave the real world for an hour or two? Escapologist tribe is for you. Start your adventure in an abandoned space station all by yourself and find a way to get out. You will need to escape from 4 different rooms full of puzzles including zero gravity and being in outer space. You might prefer to unravel the mystery of being stuck all alone in a cabin. Searching high and low for clues or objects that’ll help you to escape the cabin and the snow blizzard that surrounds you.


Do you dream of alternative places or memories from childhood that leave you wondering “what if I could visit again”? The Dreamer tribe could be you. Take an immersive journey which melds a captivating realm that unfolds as you make your way through a fantastical yet familiar world. You could decide to revisit your childhood by going back to that old-fashioned pier that lets you insert coins on the claw machine to try and win the gift or visit the shooting gallery and dino whack machine. Great thing is you never run out coins to play and you collect tickets to claim virtual prizes from the gift shop.


If a genie granted you one wish and you are the type of person who answers with “magical powers” then the Enchanter tribe is looking for you. Combine arcane ingredients into a boiling cauldron with the help of an ancient spirit trapped in a human skull. Unleash creative or destructive wizardry upon a fully interactive world. Travel to new places, finding yourself in mysterious circumstances set in an unforgettable atmosphere. You could also visit the fantasy equivalent of a 24-hour convenience store and peruse artifacts, shop for familiars and cast a few spells.


Piers has been gaming since the late 1980’s, original machines included the BBC Master Compact and Commodore 64. In 1992 The Lawnmower Man film was released featuring virtual reality as the main theme, starting a passion for VR. Before founding Virtual-Realities Limited, he worked for HTC where he was fortunate enough to experience the early HTC Vive. Piers knew that hardware could finally match the film from 1992 and instantly the future had arrived!
